Sustainability

In order to promote the sustainability of the project, the participating countries and stakeholders will be encouraged to forge partnerships and networks based on the participation of public and private sectors including the civil society in the project activities, at national, regional, continental, and international levels. This is compatible with the aspirations of NEPAD and participating countries’ government policies. The latter put Science and Technology, especially in the biosciences, as priority areas for sustainable development, poverty alleviation, food security and mitigation against dreadful diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, etc. The forging of partnerships with both the private and public sector organizations will offer opportunities for funding and other forms of support for the project activities. Synergy will be sought with other networks and projects to ensure that there is cooperation and sharing of experiences.

The project will also emphasize capacitation of women and youth in terms of training and awareness campaigns on the importance of promoting IKS in the biosciences for sustainable development. This is in line with most of the government policies of the countries in the region which put emphasis on youth development and gender equality. In order to provide local sustainability of the planned projects, participants will also be encouraged to provide matching funds and other resources necessary for the implementation of the project activities. The stakeholders/participants will include research and academic institutions, Government and non-governmental organizations. Participants in the planned IKS workshops will be required to pay subscriptions. Workshop, exhibitions and conference publications will be sold to recover costs.
