The project general objective is to integrate and build regional capacity in IKS in the
biosciences through training and networking. IKS is increasing recognized as an important
tool for promoting sustainable development. Networking is one of the ways in which
different institutions can share scarce resources; strengthen collaboration in initiating and
implementing regional development projects. This project will involve: (i) identifying and
establishing a database of training institutions, academics, postgraduates and researchers in
the region involved in IKS in the biosciences. This will form a basis for creating viable and
sustainable regional networks for conducting regional awareness workshops on IKS in
biosciences; (ii) postgraduate training (Masters and doctorate) and short (certificate) courses
in IKS in biosciences. The project will be implemented by a broad based consortium
composed of four IKS research and training institutions. The consortium will be responsible
for coordination, implementation and financial management of project activities. Within each
participating country, there will be a project coordinator. The monitoring of the project will
be done at country and regional levels. To ensure in equity in capacity building, emphasis
will be on women, disabled and youth.
Indigenous Knowledge and innovation systems (IKS) refers to a distinctive body of
knowledge and skills, including practices and technologies that have been developed over
many generations outside the formal educational system. IKS enable communities to survive
in food security and nutrition, mitigation of diseases, etc. Studies show that the Southern
African region has diverse cultures, natural resource base, and IKS. Its biggest challenge is
poverty including dreadful diseases such as HIV/AID, malaria, TB, etc. IKS is recognized as
a crucial tool for sustainable development. Furthermore, literatures indicate that globalization
has made it imperative that IKS cannot be ignored, as they are increasingly seen as part of the
global body of knowledge. It is on the basis of this that IKS was identified as one of the
flagship areas of the NEPAD/SANBio initiative. SANBIO is establishing regional networks
involved in R&D and capacity building.
