BioFISA is a Finnish-Southern Africa Partnership Programme to Strengthen NEPAD/SANBio, funded by the governments of South Africa (DST) and Finland (MFA).
The objective of the BioFISA Partnership Programme is to develop the Southern
African capacities in the area of biosciences and to bring new innovative biosciences
related products in the market in order to eradicate poverty and to achieve sustainable
development.
To achieve the
objectives of the BioFISA Programme, five interlinked components have been designed
as follows:
- Institutional strengthening of the SANBio Secretariat
- Development of the operating environment
- Capacity development
- Network creation and dissemination
- Identification, development and implementation of project activities among the
Network
The purpose of BioFISA is to strengthen the operational capacity of NEPAD/African
Biosciences Initiative in Southern Africa. It will support SANBio in rolling out the
SANBio Business Plan in the twelve member states namely, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho,
Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland,
Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

- University of Namibia: Technology transfer on mushroom farming
- SADC Plant Genetic Resources Centre (SPGRC), Zambia: Conservation of plant genetic resources (gene banks)
- University of Zambia (UNZA) / National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR), Zambia: Livestock production
- University of Mauritius: Bioinformatics
- North-West University: Indigenous Knowledge Systems
