Dr Heidi Kugeler shares thoughts on time spent in NEPAD
28 March 2007
As part of the Bosch Fellowship Programme in International Affairs, Dr Heidi Kugeler joined the NEPAD Office for Science and Technology for three months. On the eve of her departure, she shares some thoughts on her experience.
"In the course of the German Bosch Fellowship Programme in International Affairs, I was placed at the NEPAD Office for Science and Technology for three months. During that period, I had the opportunity to assist the office in monitoring the implementation of "Africa's Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action" (CPA). Apart from attending meetings with various stakeholders involved in the flagship programmes launched by NEPAD and AMCOST, I prepared a report on accomplishments and challenges in the implementation of the CPA. Furthermore, I assisted NEPAD OST in co-coordinating communication with the G8 Carnegie Group and in exploring ways in which to strengthen science and technology cooperation with international partners.
Having the opportunity to work at the heart of an evolving network of institutions of higher education and research, of scientists and science ministers from across the African continent was a very rewarding and enriching experience. It has been an honor being involved in the implementation of a portfolio of activities that could help transform the way Africa is drawing on science and technology for its development, and constitute a new basis for regional and international cooperation in science and innovation."
