The African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology (AMCOST) and its Steering Committee for Science and Technology consolidates the science and technology programmes of the African Union (AU) Commission and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

African Union (AU) Commission
The Commission plays a central role in the day-to-day management of the African Union. Among others, it represents the Union and defends its interests; elaborates draft common positions of the Union; prepares strategic plans and studies for the consideration of the Executive Council; elaborates, promotes, coordinates and harmonizes the programmes and policies of the Union with those of the RECs; ensures the mainstreaming of gender in all programmes and activities of the Union.

New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)
NEPAD is a vision and strategic framework for Africa's renewal. NEPAD is designed to address the current challenges facing the African continent. Issues such as the escalating poverty levels, under-development and the continued marginalisation of Africa needed a new radical intervention, spearheaded by African leaders, to develop a new vision that would guarantee Africa’s renewal.
